Telecom companies are collectively serving more than 922 Million subscribers in India. India’s Telecom Segment is registering gradual resurgence in terms of subscriber addition. In continuation to last month’s trend , telecom companies managed to add about 7 Million subscribers.  The subscriber base stood at 915 Million at the end of December 2013. Now it is slightly more than 922 Million indicating about the same growth rate of 0.5%, shared the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India ( TRAI ), “ The monthly growth rate of urban and rural subscription is 0.47% and 1.17 % respectively ” Despite the relatively miniscule growth rate of the rural regions, it is here that the telecom companies are finding new subscribers. In fact, the urban regions are now proving to be a regressive battleground. The share of urban subscribers actually declined from 60.03% to 59.8%, but the share of rural subscribers increased from 39.97%to 40.14%in January. Airtel trumps Vodafone this month: Last month Vodafone was the top company in terms of subscriber additions. But this month Bharti Airtel managed to surpass the pace by adding 24.33 Lakh subscribers. Its user base now stands at 20.08 Crores. Vodafone had to be content by adding 17.80 Lakh subscribers. Its subscriber base now stands at 16.21 Crores. Though the tussle between the two may continue for some time, Vodafone still holds about 18.16% Market Share, but Airtel is still quite ahead with 22.48% Market Share. Its recent acquisition of Loop Mobile only strengthens its lead. The wireline business continued to decline: The wireline subscriber base declined from 2.88 Crores at the end of December, to 2.87 Crores at the end of January 2014. This indicates that customers are now starting to shift to wireless internet access platforms. TRAI added a very interesting bit by saying, “ Private operators hold 89.01% of the wireless subscriber market share where as BSNL and MTNL, the two PSU operators hold only 10.99% market share ,” Now that the overall telecom segment has started to grow , will the PSUs now realign their strategies to crawl out of their financial situation ?
